It's spring again and for many families that means it's time to open the windows and let some fresh air in. But if you have young children, it's also time to think about childproofing your windows.
About 2 years ago, Joel got a frantic call from a neighbor whose two-year-old son had fallen out of their first story window and ended up on his head in their backyard mulch bed. The window was open to enjoy the weather and the screen was in, but screens are for tiny bugs - they can't stop an inquisitive and playful toddler or child.
Joel's neighbor ended up being OK but the boy's mother and father are a completely different story -- they haven't opened a window since!
That measure is a bit extreme and unnecessary if you childproof the windows you plan to open. Following are several window safety tips as well as links to window safety products we've researched and currently use for our own young families.

Screens keep bugs out - not kids in! |

Children are more likely to die or be severely injured from window falls than from falls associated with any other structure. |

|
| • |
Only open the windows on upper floors if they have window safety guards (bars) or window stops that prevent it from opening greater than 3.5 inches.

There are several window safety products which will allow you to safely vent your home this spring. One of our favorites is the super stopper. Placed correctly, this ingenious little suction cup will prevent your window from opening too wide. It can easily be moved from window to window. Keep about 3 downstairs and 3 upstairs to allow for ease of ventilation. |

The window wedge is another window safety guard that many of our clients have given high marks to. |

For your favorite windows which you'd like open more than 3.5", you may consider a mesh window guard or window barrier. |
Used correctly, all of these window safety products can ensure your children play safely inside your home while still enjoying the spring air.
